Ian descended to a post-tropical cyclone after hitting South Carolina on Friday with damaging winds and a life-threatening storm after killing at least 42 people in Florida.
“We need to understand that Ian’s transition to a post-tropical cyclone does not mean that it is no longer a danger,” the National Hurricane Control Center told the TV channel.
In addition to loss of life and extensive damage to homes, “Ian” also left the local population without electricity. According to the portal Poweroutage.com, which aggregates data from grid companies, as of 20.00 local time (03.00 Moscow time) more than one and a half million electricity consumers in Florida, 147 thousand in South Carolina, almost 285 thousand in North Carolina and 58 thousand in Virginia.
On Friday, US President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency in the state of South Carolina in connection with the approach of Ian.
Hurricane Ian hit the southwest coast of Florida on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and flooding, shutting down more than 2.5 million consumers and paralyzing telecommunications networks and airports. On Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called the damage from the hurricane “historic” and described the overflow of one of the local rivers as an event that happens once every five thousand years.
