WASHINGTON, October 1 – Novosti. The United States is not interested in a speedy settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and will continue to take measures to escalate it against the interests of the entire collective West, experts interviewed by Novosti believe.
According to the historian and analyst of international politics, Professor Jereni Kuzmarov, the US authorities will continue to weaken their key rivals – Russia and China .
“The United States cannot tolerate anyone who competes with its power and will do anything to weaken Russia and China and their attempts to develop alliance relations,” Kuzmarov said.
In his opinion, the results of the referendums on joining Russia strengthen the position of the Russian Federation, but the United States is not ready to consider the weakening of Ukraine as a possible scenario and will contribute to an even greater escalation.
“These referendums, while not ideal, show that many people in eastern Ukraine have chosen to be part of Russia just like the Crimeans, and see this as a great advantage for themselves in protecting against Ukrainian terrorism, covered by the West,” Kuzmarov said.
“Foreign aid supports Ukraine, but it’s difficult to say how long it can last. The country is facing serious economic problems,” the expert believes.
However, Lozansky sees no way for the current presidential administration to change course “until the American people have voiced their voices.”
Historian and analyst Dan Lazar, in an interview with Novosti, expressed similar assessments, noting Washington ‘s desire to further increase arms supplies to Ukraine.
“(The United States) intends to arm Ukraine to the teeth and support its maximalist demands for the restoration of Donbass and Crimea. Compromise looks more and more distant,” he said.
Moreover, according to Lazar, the United States can use the situation in the region to destabilize China, which is also considered by the American authorities as its enemy, and to establish even greater control over resources in Central Asia .
Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24. President Vladimir Putin called its goal “the protection of people who have been subjected to bullying and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years.” The ultimate goal of the special military operation, according to the President of the Russian Federation, is the liberation of Donbass and the creation of conditions that guarantee the security of Russia itself.
In September, in an address to the Russians, Putin said that the West had crossed every line in its anti-Russian policy, as well as constant threats against Russia. According to him, the West used nuclear blackmail, the use of weapons of mass destruction against Russia. The Russian leader reminded the West that Russia is superior in a number of components to foreign military equipment, and warned those trying to blackmail the Russian Federation with nuclear weapons that the wind rose could turn in their direction.
The West, not recognizing the referenda on joining Russia, is showing double standards, Russia’s permanent representative Vasily Nebenzya pointed out to the UN Security Council , recalling the recognition of Kosovo . There are other examples in history of the recognition by the West of the separation and annexation of territories without the consent of the states to which they belonged. Texas seceded from Mexico in 1836 and then became part of the United States; in 1990 and 1991, Slovenia and Croatia held referendums on independence from Yugoslavia without the consent of its authorities and were recognized; in 1991 referendums on independence from the USSR were held in Estonia , Ukraine,Georgia , Moldova , Turkmenistan , Armenia and Azerbaijan – against the will of the Soviet leadership and the entire Soviet people, who at the all-Union referendum spoke in favor of preserving the Union; and during the unification of the FRG and the GDR, no one asked the opinion of the population at all – the absorption of East Germany by West took place without a referendum.
At the same time, the results of referendums within the Western countries themselves are ignored. In 2017, 90% of the inhabitants of the autonomy voted for the independence of Catalonia from Spain , after which Madrid began large-scale repressions against supporters of independence. At the end of 2017, the inhabitants of the Italian Veneto and Lombardy demanded more autonomy from Rome in referenda , but the process of granting new powers from the central authorities stalled.
