MOSCOW, October 1 – Novosti. In recent months, the Czech Republic has detained a record number of escorts of illegal migrants across the border, and a quarter of them turned out to be Ukrainians, the Lidovky newspaper writes .
According to her, in nine months the police have already identified 125 guides of illegal immigrants, although in previous years they were caught no more than ten. At the same time, most often Ukrainians turn out to be smugglers.
“In total, we detained 30 Ukrainian guides, 24 Czechs and 17 Syrians,” Josef Botan, spokesman for the police department, told Lidovky.
The former head of the search department of the Customs Administration, Robert Shlakhta, suggested that those Ukrainians who fled to the Czech Republic because of the current conflict in their homeland were involved in smuggling. In addition, the illegal delivery of people is carried out by Czechs living in the border regions, since there is no strict punishment for this.
Due to the growing number of smugglers , Prague plans to tighten the legislation: the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice are now working on a corresponding amendment.
In general, writes Lidovky, almost 12,000 illegal migrants have been detained in the Czech Republic since the beginning of the year — significantly more than during the migration crisis in Europe in 2015.
At the same time, the publication emphasizes, crime is growing only because of the conductors across the border, and the refugees themselves, according to the police, do not pose a particular danger to law and order.
