October 1 is celebrated annually around the world as International Music Day, which was established at the initiative of the International Music Council (IMC) at UNESCO in 1973 at the 15th General Assembly of the IMC in Lausanne (Switzerland). The initiator of the celebration of this day was the famous American violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999).
The purpose of the International Music Day is to popularize the art of music among all sectors of society, the realization of the ideals of peace and friendship between peoples, the development of cultures, the exchange of experience and the mutual recognition of aesthetic values.

In Russia, International Music Day has been celebrated since 1996, when it was 90 years since the birth of composer Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975), one of the initiators of the establishment of the holiday.

In 2022, on Music Day, the Moscow International House of Music will present to the public the universe program “From Bach to Rachmaninoff”.
Concert Hall named after P.I. Tchaikovsky will present a program with the participation of Denis Matsuev, Valery Gergiev and the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra. A festive concert dedicated to the Day of Music will be held in the Great Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovsky.
