DOHA, October 1 – Novosti. Demonstrators in Baghdad decided to end the protest in central Baghdad and give political forces until October 25 to resolve the political crisis by threatening to intensify protests and demanding the formation of a UN-sponsored transitional government, the demonstrators said in a statement obtained by the Iraqi news agency Shafaq.
“We sacrificed blood to pave the way for our highest goal – the goal of regime change, the political establishment in Iraq, a regime that has destroyed the country and exhausted the people,” the protesters said.
They accused the Iraqi political parties of corruption and division of the country according to religious denominations, as well as of venality and service to foreign states that “do not want good for a united Iraq and its people.”
“Our goal is to change the existing political system and reset the entire political process so that the Iraqis can build a new political system with a constitution and a new social contract formulated on the basis of a national vision in Iraq, to get rid of the hybrid system designed by foreigners, so we will give all political forces until October 25 this year to change the political regime, otherwise we will take larger steps to escalate the situation,” the protesters said in a statement.
They also called for the formation of a “transitional government under international control, to be led by a patriotic elite, provided that it does not include the current politicians, including the existing executive in the person of Mustafa al-Kazemi .”
Earlier, demonstrators held a massive anti-government protest in the center of Baghdad. More than 50 people, 24 law enforcement officers and 27 protesters were injured as a result of clashes and the use of tear gas during a rally between demonstrators and security forces, according to Shafaq security sources.
