MOSCOW, October 1 – Novosti. Militants attacked the base of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in the east of the country, killing a peacekeeper, the mission said in a statement.
It is noted that the incident occurred late on Friday evening. The militants attacked the base of the mission in the Minambwe region in the province of South Kivu.
“During this attack, militants killed a peacekeeper as they approached the base after informing MONUSCO that they were ready to surrender,” the mission’s website said in a statement.
The mission condemned the militant attack and recalled that attacks on UN peacekeepers could be considered a war crime.
MONUSCO is the largest UN mission in the world with at least 14,000 peacekeepers.
