BRAZIL/MOSCOW, October 2 – Novosti. Russia will win with the victory of any candidate in the presidential elections in Brazil, whether it be the current head of state Jair Bolsonaro, or ex-president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, Dmitry Razumovsky, director of the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Novosti.
“Russia and Brazil are the largest economies comparable in terms of GDP; both have a powerful industrial technology sector. We objectively have complementarity both industrial and technological. And cooperation with Russia objectively meets the interests of Brazil, regardless of who is in power. That is, any Brazilian leader understands that interaction with Russia is primarily in the interests of Brazil, as well as the reverse situation. Therefore, in principle, we expect and expect that any winning candidate will adhere to these approaches,” he said. .
Razumovsky added that Russia has a successful experience of cooperation with both Bolsonaro and Lula da Silva. During the reign of the latter (2003-2011), relations between Russia and Brazil reached the highest level of strategic partnership, and not only in a bilateral format, but also within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union , BRICS , G20 , within the UN Security Council .
“There is this positive baggage of interaction with Lula, we know him as a politician, we understand him, and we know his approaches. In principle, if he comes to power, returns to power, we can expect that to some extent there will be a repetition of that format , the scheme of cooperation that was in the 2000s, but, of course, with certain changes,” Razumovsky said.
“It was possible to maintain almost the entire volume of cooperation with Bolsonaro, to convince him of mutual benefit … Well, the fact that in the last year, especially after Bolsonaro’s visit to Russia in February, we really have more than close friendly relations is obvious to everyone … Therefore, we can expect that if Bolsonaro retains his post, then this line and format of cooperation will be continued,” the director of the institute added.
“I can expect and assume that both outcomes are positive for Russia. And this, on the whole, is a very favorable situation for us. That is, there are no particular risks of worsening relations, a rollback of them,” Razumovsky stressed.
