Earlier Agence France-Presse reported that a fire broke out outside the French embassy in the afternoon . In addition, the agency added that a fire also broke out in front of the building of the French Institute in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the violence against our diplomatic institutions in Burkina Faso. Any encroachment on our diplomatic institutions is unacceptable. We call on the parties concerned to ensure their security in accordance with international conventions,” the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
French citizens have been instructed and asked to stay at home until further notice, the statement said.
Earlier, the media reported that a military group in Burkina Faso, led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, announced the removal of the head of the country’s transitional government, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, the suspension of the constitution in the country, the dissolution of the government and the closure of borders. The French Embassy in Burkina Faso said earlier that the French army had nothing to do with what was happening in the country.
The military who came to power in Burkina Faso said that Sandaogo Damiba was hiding at a French military base, where he was preparing a “counteroffensive.” The French Foreign Ministry denied these reports.
