
NEW DELHI, October 2 – Novosti. At least 27 people have been killed and more than 20 injured in India when a tractor and trailer carrying people fell into a pond, according to the Times of India .
The incident took place overnight in the Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh . The tractor driver, who was transporting about 50 people in a trailer, lost control, after which the car collapsed into the water. Most of the victims are women and children, according to local authorities. All of them were returning home from a religious ceremony at a local temple.
“Grieved by the accident of a tractor with a trailer in Kanpur. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and relatives. Prayers with the wounded. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to the victims,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted . He added that the families of the victims will be compensated in the amount of 200,000 rupees ($2,440) from the Prime Minister’s relief fund, while the victims will receive 50,000 rupees ($612).
Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, said that “tractors with a trailer should only be used for transporting goods, not for transporting people.”
“The traffic accident in Kanpur district is very heartbreaking. The District Judge and other senior officers have been ordered to immediately arrive on the scene and carry out military-based relief operations and take steps to properly treat the injured,” Adityanath tweeted.
