CHISINAU, October 2 – Novosti. The presidents of nine European countries support the possible accession of Ukraine to NATO, according to the administration of the press service of the head of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.
“We, the presidents of the states of Central and Eastern Europe … firmly support the decision of the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008 regarding the future accession of Ukraine,” reads a joint statement posted on the website of the Romanian presidential administration.
The authors of the declaration also ask Russia to leave the territory of Ukraine. The document was signed by the presidents of Romania, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania , North Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland and Slovakia.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier that Ukraine is applying to join NATO in an expedited manner. The procedure for Ukraine’s admission to NATO is now untimely, said Jake Sullivan, Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Affairs, later. And NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg , commenting on Zelensky’s statement, recognized the bloc’s unchanged position on the right of each country to determine its own path and on the “open door” policy, but stressed that NATO would concentrate its efforts on helping Kiev defend itself.
Russia has repeatedly stated that the North Atlantic Alliance is aimed at confrontation. Thus, the presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that its further expansion would not bring greater security to Europe.
