BRAZIL/MOSCOW, October 2 – Novosti. Fears about mass protests after the presidential elections in Brazil are rather an element of the election campaign, while it is difficult to say what scenario to expect, Dmitry Razumovsky, director of the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences, believes.
Presidential elections in Brazil will be held on October 2. The main candidates are Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro . If none of the candidates receives more than 50% of the votes, the second round will be held on October 30.
“This is a myth that has been very actively promoted by Bolsonaro’s opponents since 2021, that (if Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wins ) there will be a coup, that the scenario of storming the Capitol by (Donald) Trump will be implemented if Bolsonaro does not accept the result. Here now it’s hard to say something. Probably, there is no smoke without fire,” the Novosti expert said.
According to him, Bolsonaro criticizes the electoral system, the Supreme Electoral Court.
“Probably, yes, Bolsonaro will have claims (following the results of the vote), he will voice them. But the question is whether this will be an attempt, God forbid, some kind of forceful solution. It also depends on how other key forces in the country, the same military, will react. If they recognize the results as honest, it will be very difficult to do something. Therefore, now, probably, this is just an element of the pre-election struggle, these insinuations. We hope that these crises will be avoided.” Razumovsky said.
He added that the question is what will be the gap between the candidates. “If there is a gap of several percent in the second round, then, of course, there will probably be more reasons to demand a recount or doubt honesty. But if the gap is more convincing, then most of the political forces will probably accept the results,” the expert said. .
