MOSCOW, October 2 – Novosti. If the West gives in to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s demands to join NATO, this winter could go from cold to nuclear, writes Bradley Devlin in an op-ed for The American Conservative.
“At first glance, this proposal is so ridiculous that one might think that Zelensky is putting on a show to return to his old profession as a stand-up comedian. However, this staged political stunt is not a reason to laugh,” the publication says.
The author believes that Ukraine’s application to join NATO can also be symbolic. But if that is the case, Zelenskiy should be even more ashamed that he is bringing the world closer to nuclear war, Devlin writes.
In any case, in his opinion, Zelensky’s announcement of joining NATO, whether genuine or feigned, shows a disregard for the consequences.
On September 30, President Vladimir Putin and the heads of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions signed agreements on the inclusion of these regions into Russia. Against this background, Zelensky said that Kyiv would immediately apply for an accelerated entry into NATO. However, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recalled that the consent of all 30 participating countries is required to accept a new member into the military bloc, although he promised that NATO would concentrate efforts on helping Kiev defend itself.
