MOSCOW, October 4 – Novosti. The time has come for the European Union to pay for its ill-conceived energy policy and dependence on Russian gas supplies, Nicola Porro, deputy editor-in-chief of il Giornale, said in a column.
“Unfortunately, the hour of reckoning has come for us. We physically have less gas than we need. And the volume that we will have will cost dearly. Soon we must decide what to do with rationing. With such exorbitant prices, the market merciless: kills those who consume more,” he wrote.
According to the journalist, the energy crisis began in October last year and has nothing to do with the events in Ukraine . However, then Europe preferred not to notice the problems. But even after the start of the Russian special operation , Brussels did not take adequate steps to resolve the gas issue, writes Porro.
“Until now, Europe has been chasing impossible dreams. It has done nothing but, worst of all, promised price caps that it could not actually set,” he explained.
The journalist notes that now the EU leadership can no longer influence the situation due to Russia’s monopoly position in the gas market. Italy does not have the opportunity to replace Russian fuel, despite contracts with other suppliers. In addition, due to the lack of gas, there will be problems with electricity, the lack of which cannot be compensated by solar panels.
“Municipal enterprises are in despair. Recently, in an interview with the director of Iren (energy company. — Approx. ed.), Gianni Armani said that if earlier his company received 70 percent of the gas under contracts, now only 40 percent. To be very clear, there is no gas enough, or no one believes that it will be enough in the coming months,” Porro concluded.
After the start of the special operation in Ukraine , the West stepped up sanctions pressure on Russia, which led to an increase in prices for electricity, fuel and food in Europe and the United States . President Vladimir Putin has said that the policy of containing and weakening Moscow is a long-term strategy for the West, and sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy. According to him, the main goal of the United States and its allies is to worsen the lives of millions of people.
