“In a few days, 1,700 carcasses of Caspian seals were found on the coast of the Caspian Sea in Dagestan. Judging by the appearance of the seals we found, they died about two weeks ago. Signs of violent death, no remains of fishing nets were found. Most likely, the number of dead seals is much higher. The coastal patrol of the Caspian Environmental Center, as well as inspectors from the Federal Agency for Fishery and employees of other environmental departments continue to explore the coast,” the agency’s interlocutor said.
Specialists of the environmental center collected the necessary samples for a detailed study of the reasons for the death of seals.
According to the center, the number of Caspian seals in the Caspian Sea does not exceed 70,000 individuals. Accurate data are not available, since there is no monitoring of numbers and expeditions in Dagestan.
“We plan to establish this process, including contacting the relevant services so that they pledge funds for expeditions to seal rookeries. They need to be microchipped and counted. Dagestan also needs a rehabilitation center where they would take care of the wounded and weakened animals and then release them to will. There are such centers in Kazakhstan , Iran, Vladivostok, Kaliningrad , St. Petersburg and Baikal . It’s time to create something similar in Dagestan,” Gapizov concluded.
The Caspian seal is an endemic and the only marine mammal species found in the Caspian Sea that plays a unique role in the marine ecosystem. She is a unique representative of the family of true seals, the only marine mammal in the fauna of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian seal reaches a length of 160 centimeters, body weight – up to 100 kilograms. Feeding mainly on fish, the seal is at the top of the food pyramid and has no natural enemies as adults.
