WASHINGTON, September 30 – Novosti. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts a further deterioration in the situation with global food security, despite some stabilization in food prices.
In a report released on Friday, the fund warns of the threat of a food crisis at least comparable in magnitude to the hardships of 2007-2008, when “many countries faced acute food shortages, resulting in significant disasters and many deaths.”
“Although world food prices have recently declined, the food security situation is likely to worsen,” the document says. Prices, according to the IMF, although retreated from the record levels of April-May, still remain at “historically high levels.”
The Fund acknowledges that the situation is difficult to predict, and lists declining food stocks, difficulties with the export of agricultural products from Ukraine , the high cost of fertilizers and energy, and negative forecasts for the rice harvest among the risk factors.
