
ASTANA, September 30 – Novosti. A court in Astana sentenced a man accused of high treason and preparing to assassinate Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to 17 years, the press service of the court reported.
On April 3, the National Security Committee (KNB) of the republic announced the arrest of “a foreign intelligence agent who was planning an assassination attempt on the Kazakh leader and a number of high-ranking government officials.” The KNB explained that the detainee simultaneously planned to commit terrorist acts against employees of special and law enforcement agencies. In addition, according to the intelligence services, he “performed tasks to promote anti-Russian propaganda in the republic and create Russophobic views in society by publishing relevant materials on social networks.” During the search, a foreign-made sniper rifle with a silencer, drugs and a large sum of money were seized from him. “A final sentence of 17 years in prison was appointed to serve in the institutions of the penitentiary system of maximum security,” the court said in a statement.
According to the report, the Astana Specialized Inter-District Criminal Court issued a guilty verdict against the Kazakhstani on September 28. The criminal case was considered in a closed court session.
