ANKARA, September 30 – Novosti. The United States is dismantling arms control mechanisms, representatives of NATO countries have started talking about the possibility of using nuclear weapons against Russia, said Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Turkey Alexei Yerkhov.
“For a long time, NATO has been moving closer and closer to our borders, and this rightly causes concern in Russia. From our point of view, NATO is a relic of the Cold War, the need for which has disappeared with its end. But NATO continues to exist, and, as we see that this alliance is used only as an instrument of US foreign policy,” the ambassador said, speaking at a conference on the settlement in Ukraine and Turkey’s role in it at Sakarya University .
According to him, “on the initiative of the United States, the mechanisms of arms control and the maintenance of strategic stability, created by generations of negotiators, are being dismantled.”
“At the doctrinal level, the Americans lowered the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, and some high-ranking representatives of the leading NATO countries started talking about the possibility and admissibility of using weapons of mass destruction against Russia – nuclear weapons. And we were not the first to raise this issue. These and other disturbing moments make military planners to work out the most dangerous scenarios of a nuclear collision, which can lead to catastrophic consequences,” the diplomat stressed.
