Newsweek called Zelensky’s request for Kyiv to join NATO a “worst idea”

WASHINGTON, September 30 – Novosti. Newsweek Deputy Opinion Editor Jason Fields in his column called Volodymyr Zelensky’s request for an accelerated admission of Ukraine to NATO “the worst idea in history.”
“Accepting Ukraine to NATO, Mr. Zelensky, is the worst idea in history,” Fields said.
He noted that the admission of Ukraine to NATO would drag the United States and its NATO allies into a war with Russia, which could lead to a nuclear war and threaten the existence of mankind.
Earlier on Friday, Zelensky said that Kyiv, in response to the accession to Russia of the DPR, LPR, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, applied for accelerated admission to NATO.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, commenting on Zelensky’s statement, acknowledged the bloc’s unchanged position on the right of each country to determine its own path and on the “open door” policy, but stressed that NATO would concentrate its efforts on helping Kyiv defend itself.
Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Jake Sullivan, in turn, said that the procedure for admitting Ukraine to NATO is now untimely.
