However, the message in the Kremlin was clearly addressed not so much to the Ukrainian regime as to the collective West.

At the same time, he advised Kyiv to respect the referendums in the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions in order to embark on the path to peace. “We call on the Kyiv regime to immediately stop hostilities and return to the negotiating table. We are ready for this. This has been said more than once,” the president recalled.
Long haul
The DPR and LPR arose in 2014 as a reaction to the coup d’état in Kyiv. Then in the Donetsk region, 75% of voters took part in the referendum, of which 89% voted for independence. In the Lugansk region, there were 96% of supporters of sovereignty. Despite this, Moscow recognized the republics as independent states only in February 2022.
Of course, the DPR and LPR wanted to repeat the scenario of the Crimean Spring, but events developed differently. Kyiv announced an anti-terrorist operation, the victims of which by the beginning of 2022 were about 14 thousand people. The international community, including Russia, tried to reconcile the parties to the conflict on the basis of the Minsk agreements. But the negotiations were unsuccessful.
Only eight years later, the republics held another plebiscite – for joining Russia. With a turnout of over 90% in the DPR and LPR, almost one hundred percent of the population supported the accession. At the same time, voting took place in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. There the result is 87 and 93%, respectively. Both regions were recognized by Moscow as independent states on the night of September 30th.
Crimea, as you know, “returned to its native harbor” in March 2014. Almost 97% of those who voted in favor of this in the referendum. Since then, the peninsula has been connected to the mainland by a bridge, the Tavrida highway has been built, power grids and other infrastructure have been upgraded, wages and pensions have been raised.
The European Union, the United States and their satellites did not recognize any of these votes. Moscow was punished with a record number of sanctions. Washington’s desire for world domination is expressed not only in aggression against Russia, but also in its attitude towards American satellites in Europe. “The Anglo-Saxons are no longer satisfied with sanctions, they have switched to sabotage. By organizing explosions on the international gas pipelines of the Nord Stream, which run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, [they] actually began to destroy the pan-European energy infrastructure,” Putin stated.
