UN, December 31 – Novosti. The UN Security Council statement for the press on the situation around the Lachin corridor was not accepted due to the approach of France, Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN , said .
The road through the Lachin corridor is the only route linking Karabakh with Armenia . According to the November 2020 agreements that put an end to hostilities in Karabakh, the road is controlled by the Russian peacekeeping contingent stationed in the region for a period of five years.
“I can’t help but note the absolutely false presentation of information about the reasons for the UN Security Council’s failure to adopt a statement for the press on the situation around the Lachin corridor,” Polyansky wrote in his Telegram channel.
According to him, the permanent mission of the Russian Federation from the very beginning was determined to work constructively in the context of working out the reaction of the Security Council.
“And this despite the fact that, unlike Western countries, we are not in words, but in deeds, are engaged in the settlement of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh , including around the Lachin corridor,” he added.
As Polyansky pointed out, Russian peacekeepers provide security and seek solutions to controversial issues in contacts with the parties.
“Regardless of the current aggravation, four joint statements at the highest level, supported by both Baku and Yerevan, remain the basis for normalization. During the work on the statement, our former Western partners did not find the courage to mention these documents and the efforts of Russian peacekeepers,” Polyansky wrote.
According to him, “Westerners were more concerned with accepting some product of the Security Council, rather than resolving the conflict situation.” “We are firmly convinced that the reaction of the Council should contribute to finding a compromise and resuming the peace process, without labeling any of the parties,” the first deputy representative emphasized.
“I personally really want to believe that our Armenian friends will not let themselves be drawn into unscrupulous geopolitical games to please those who do not hesitate to use any pretexts to push the fraternal peoples who lived together in the USSR and inflate even the slightest contradictions and problems in our home,” – he added.
Earlier on Thursday, Pashinyan called on Russia to initiate a discussion in the UN Security Council of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, which has developed due to the blockade of the Lachin corridor. According to him, the blocking of the Lachin corridor is a violation of the sixth point of the tripartite statement of the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan dated November 9, 2020. As Pashinyan assures, both Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh expect the Russian side to make an assessment of the situation, present a plan and a roadmap for restoring traffic.
